The Philippine Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (PSOPRS) held a successful two-day surgical mission last August 8 and 9, 2024 at the Southern Philippines Medical Center (SPMC) in Davao City. The event was spearheaded by Dr. Mariel Angelou Parulan. This event was held in coordination with the SPMC Department of Ophthalmology, led by Dr. Gabriel Bunagan, the head of the Orbits and Oculoplastics Section, and Dr. Emmanuel Lee Boniao.
The mission drew a strong team of volunteers, including 21 PSOPRS members, orbit and oculoplastics fellow-in-training, and the dedicated ophthalmology residents from SPMC. Their collaborative efforts resulted in the successful treatment of 25 patients with various oculoplastic and orbital conditions. The team performed a range of procedures from minor interventions to complex orbital and reconstructive surgeries. Services included botulinum injections, blepharoplasty, ectropion repair and ptosis repair, as well as more complex surgeries such as eyelid reconstruction, anophthalmic socket reconstruction, excision of eyelid and orbital mass, and exenteration.
This mission not only provided much-needed medical care to patients who might not have had access to said services, but it also opens an avenue for sharing of knowledge and skills among the participating specialist, fellow-in-training and residents. Another key highlight was the lecture on thyroid eye disease given by the current PSOPRS president, Dr. Yvette Marie Santiago-Gatmaitan.
Considering it was held during Davao City's Kadayawan Festival season, the mission also included activities for relaxation and recreation for the volunteers, fostering camaraderie and strengthening the bonds among the members.
This yearly surgical mission stands as a testament to the commitment and dedication of PSOPRS to extending specialized eye care to underserved communities.
