On June 25, 2025, the Philippine Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (PSOPRS) hosted the second RTD online for the year, featuring rare and challenging tumor cases from various institutions namely: the University of Santo Tomas (UST), Far Eastern University – Nicanor Reyes Medical Foundation (FEU-NRMF), and Cardinal Santos Medical Center (CSMC).
The first case entitled ‘Ocular and Orbital Manifestations of Encephalocraniocutaneous Lipomatosis (ECCL) in a Neonate: A Case Report from a Philippine Tertiary Center’ from UST was presented by Dr. Justine Limqueco with Dr. Noel Palmero as adviser. Dr. Roland Joseph Tan, our PSOPRS colleague who also specializes in Pediatric Ophthalmology, shared his thoughts as reactor for this rare case.
In the second presentation from FEU-NRMF by Dr. Jose Eduardo De Guzman and Dr. Lexus Neil Cahimat, we saw two of the most common differentials in lacrimal gland neoplasms discussed side-by-side, aptly titled ‘Strategies in Lacrimal Gland Neoplasms: Distinguishing Pleomorphic Adenoma from Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma’. Dr. Donna Santiago and Dr. Andrei Angbue-Te were the advisers for the case, with Dr. Elaine Marie Yatco-Omaña, as reactor – together with members in attendance, discussions delved on the key differences of both entities and the approach in management.
Capping off the roundtable discussion, the CSMC Ophthalmic Pathology and Orbit and Oculoplastics fellow showcased a challenging case of eyelid carcinoma, ‘Grease and Graft: Reconstruction after the Sebaceous Invader. The adviser was Dr. Franklin Kleiner and our reactor for this case was Dr. Honeylen Teo, our PSOPRS colleague also specializes in Ocular Oncology. The presentation highlighted a particular procedure that combines two grafts and a flap, the orbicularis sandwich technique for upper eyelid reconstruction from Dr. Franklin Kleiner. Dr. Teo shared her valuable insights to the case. This was another engaging conference, where the exchange of knowledge from all the presenters, advisers, reactors and members have been enlightening. We look forward to the next meeting, as we continue to advance ophthalmic education and updates in patient care.
