Five Filipino orbit and oculoplastic fellows-in-training from the Philippines and overseas showcased their surgical expertise during the first online PSOPRS Fellows’ Surgical Video Conference, held on March 21, 2026.

Over the past decade, fellowship training programs in ophthalmic plastic and reconstructive surgery in the Philippines have grown significantly. The University of the Philippines–Philippine General Hospital (UP-PGH) program pioneered this development, followed by The Medical City – Rizal Medical Center (TMC-RMC) consortium in 2018, Cardinal Santos Medical Center (CSMC) in 2022, and the East Avenue Medical Center (EAMC) program in 2025.

To highlight the growing strength of these programs, PSOPRS organized the Fellows’ Surgical Video Conference as a platform for fellows to present surgical techniques in eyelid, orbital, and lacrimal procedures. Four fellows-in-training based in Manila and one fellow from the Chinese University of Hong Kong participated in the inaugural event.

The program opened with the Lacrimal Session, which featured presentations by Dr. Christian Nerpiol of CSMC and Dr. Kervin Dellosa of CUHK. Dr. Nerpiol, with his adviser Dr. Alex Sua, presented “Delayed Reconstruction of Complex Medial Eyelid Trauma: Adapting the Surgical Plan Intraoperatively,” demonstrating the challenges of managing extensive injuries involving the canalicular system. Dr. Dellosa together with his esteemed adviser and past APSOPRS President, Dr. Kelvin Chong, followed with “ABCs of EEDCR: Revisiting the Fundamentals of Endoscopic Endonasal DCR.” The session was enriched by the insights of key reactors Dr. Reynaldo Javate, APSOPRS founding president and renowned mentor in lacrimal surgery, and Dr. Emmanuel Boniao.

The Eyelid Reconstruction Session showcased a range of reconstructive techniques. Dr. Camille Victoria Sison opened the session with her presentation “A New Lid on Life: A Case of Lower Eyelid Reconstruction” which described the combination of techniques used to reconstruct a large full thickness lower eyelid defect following excision of an extensive basal cell carcinoma. Her advisers for the case are Dr. Franklin Kleiner, Dr. Jo Anne Hernandez Tan, Dr. Elaine Marie Omaña, and Dr. Regina Paula Valencia. While Dr. Jose Miguel Jarabelo discussed “Upper and Lower Eyelid Cicatricial Entropion Correction via Upper Eyelid Tarsal Fracture with Everting Sutures and Lower Eyelid Symblepharon Release and Posterior Lamellar Lengthening with Nasal Mucosal Graft.” Dr. Jarabelo highlighted another set of reconstructive techniques for cicatricial eyelid and ocular surface changes, together with his adviser Dr. Marco Tumalad. Dr. John Paul Araneta completed the session with “Rhomboid Flap for Lower Lid Reconstruction Following Mass Excision” and his advisers are Dr. Alex Tan, Dr. Mary Rose Pe-Yan, Dr. Felice Katrina Ranche, Dr. Armida Suller. Valuable wisdoms were heard from our key reactors for the session, Dr. Franklin Kleiner and Dr. Victor Lopez, pioneer PSOPRS members and experts in reconstructive surgery, and Dr. Mariel Angelu Parulan, current PSOPRS Treasurer.

The event was facilitated by Dr. Jo Anne Hernandez-Tan, Dr. Alexander Gungab, and Dr. Jose Miguel Ambat. With the participation of esteemed PSOPRS mentors and reactors, together with the society’s members, the conference fostered an engaging and insightful exchange of surgical knowledge and experience.
